How I calculate the fees


When I was looking at the costs for this service, I wanted to make it fair for everyone.

I therefore looked at the costs of other domestic services and tried to place myself on that scale. This is how that looks

  • Domestic cleaner per hour:  £10 – £12 per hour
  • Gardener per hour: £17 – £20 per hour
  • Extra school lessons per hour: £30 – £35 per hour
  • Home Computer Tutor Home Visit per hour: £30 per hour
  • Home Computer Tutor Home Visit callout + first hour:  £40
  • Home Computer Tutor Phone support per hour: £25 per hour
  • Home Computer Tutor Phone call up + first hour:  £30
  • Electrician per hour: £30 – £35 per hour
  • Electrician callout + first hour: £50
  • Plumber per hour: £25 – £35 per hour
  • Plumber callout + first hour:   £50

Fees

I feel that the nature of the work being skilled and requiring both graduate level qualifications, constant updating and also experience, was akin to the requirements one would make of a teacher providing extra lessons to your children. Additionally, I have to invest in hardware and software to a considerable degree – three computers, plus a range of different software packages, to the tune of about £8000 in order to be a confident and expert adviser.

Call out / Call up charges

Since there is an element of ‘rapid response’ and travel over sometimes long distances, a callout is appropriate. This cannot command the same rate as a plumber or an electrician as it is not as urgent as a callout for a burst water-pipe or an electrical fault, but it is nevertheless necessary since time is expended in travel and the costs of running the vehicle need to be covered.

Similarly, the initial phone call up charge reflects the immediate ’stop what you’re doing’ element no matter where I may be.

There are some set costs for certain packages and courses that I run. These are more negotiable since they can be pre-arranged and often can be conducted for more than one person, it seems fair that there should be a cost saving in such an arrangement.
